In two-week cycles from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm students in small groups will be given a gentle introduction to theatre. Students will play theatre games and rehearse scenes from Folk Tales or Shakespeare in the mornings in preparation for a staged performance, and in the afternoons create the costumes and the world of the play in the great room of the Old Stone House or in air-conditioned classroom across the street in William Alexander Middle School 51. This education program is, by far, Piper’s most popular. Hurry, it fills up fast!

Folk Tales of West Africa & Russia

Dates: July 2 – 13 and July 16 – 27

This summer, join Starlings as we create our own original plays, based on two sets of traditional folk tales. Music, movement, dramatic play and more!

Shakespeare for Beginners

Dates: July 2 – 13 and July 16 – 27
Times: 9 am – 3 pm
Tuition: $550 per two-week session

A gentle introduction to Shakespeare. Students spend their days on improvisation games, vocabulary building, and character development as they rehearse an abbreviated version of Shakespeare’s greatest comedies. Afternoons are spent painting sets, building props, and pulling costumes from our massive costume collection.

Join us for Piper Theatre Workshop – one of the most exciting drama programs in Brooklyn. Under the care of experienced directors, each child becomes part of a small company of student actors creating a challenging theatrical production. Days are broken up by Specials – classes in fight choreography, improvisation, puppetry, theatre games and vocal technique.

Auditions for specific roles will take place on Monday, July 2, the first day of the program. Preferences will be considered in selection but are NOT guaranteed. Students MUST participate in each of the final performances to be a part of the workshops.

Pinocchio.  Adapted from the Carlo Collodia stories. Directed by Mollie Lief. The dark tale of a wooden puppet who yearns to become a real human boy. His adventures take him to places both grim and exciting – with the help of Geppetto, the blue-haired fairy, and of course, a talking cricket.

James and the Giant Peach.  Directed by Meredith Hackett. The adventures of James Henry Trotter, who escapes his terrible aunts, Spiker and Sponge, and travels the world with giant insects in a flying peach.

The Winter’s Tale.  By William Shakespeare.  Directed by John P. McEneny and Vasile Flutur. One of Shakespeare’s late tragicomedies, The Winter’s Tale turns on jealousy, rage and injustice and ends, after great adventure, in joy and goodwill.

Piper’s film program returns with more laptops, software and cameras. Students will write, act, direct, shoot and edit their own short films, and are encouraged to work with their video camcorders or cameras. Films will premiere outdoors on the big screen at the Old Stone House on July 25 and at the Brooklyn Lyceum July 28.

The Musical Project is for students who have had some vocal and movement experience. Familiarity with the show and its plot/characters is beneficial. All roles will be cast based on vocal and acting auditions that take place on July 2. Please have 32 bars of a musical theatre-style song prepared for the audition. This summer will mark Piper’s third musical journey! Fiddler on the Roof Jr is the story of Tevye – a fiercely devout (and fiercely stubborn!) milkman, and his quest to raise his five daughters in accordance with his strong belief in the power of “TRADITION!” Living in the small Russian village of Anatevka, Tevye, his neighbors, and his family soon find that the world around them is changing too fast for anyone to hold fast to their traditions – and maybe even to their homes.

This course is designed for experienced creative teens. Michael Buffer (Lord of Flies, Lilith, Taming of the Shrew, Corday the Assassin) returns to create another artistically demanding show.

The Government Inspector.  Adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher from the original by Nikolai Gogol. Directed by Michael Buffer.

A fun physical production of Gogol’s political satire. The mayor of a small town in Russia and his cronies learn that an inspector from the national government is coming, incognito, to investigate. In panic and fear that their chicanery and greed will be discovered, they mistake a traveling con man for the inspector, who then finds a way to exploit them.
