Piper Theatre Productions announces the 12th season of free outdoor events, a month of nurturing education programs, and further opportunities for emerging artists. This year will provide a joyous summer as the Old Stone House celebrates the long anticipated re-opening of Washington Park as it evolves into the most exciting and interactive park in all of Brooklyn with updated play schemes, a running brook, and beautiful landscaping. Piper is continually grateful for the warm hospitality of the Old Stone House and their success over the past ten years in creating a cultural hub of Park Slope.

XANADU the Musical

Performances: July 5, 6, 12, 13, 19 and 20 – 8 pm

On the theme of renewed joy and fun. Piper is producing our first musical. We are honored to be the first Brooklyn production of the musical Xanadu, a musical comedy with a book by Douglas Carter Beane (Lysistrata Jones, The Little Dog Laughed, As Bees in Honey Drowned), music and lyrics by Jeff Lynne and John Farrar, based on the beloved 1980 cult classic film with Olivia Newton John. This hilarious and self-knowing play will be directed by artistic director John P. McEneny, musical direction by Megan Jonynas, choreography by Karen Curlee, and scenery design by Sarah Edkins who designed last year’s beautiful set for The Miser. The free outdoor production will be presented July 5, 6, 12, 13, 19, and 20 at 8 pm.

THE ISLAND of DOCTOR MOREAU

Performances: July 7, 14 and 21 – 8 pm

Our second stage show will be a physical adaptation of H.G. Well’sThe Island of Doctor Moreau. Piper’s creative team for Moreau will include Chris Cariker (Piper’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern ‘09), Aaron Novak (Piper’s Hamlet ‘09’, Nocturnes ‘10), and Sean Phillips (Piper’s Othello, Hamlet, Macbeth,Cold April, Nocturnes), VasileFlutur (Piper’s Nocturnes and Twelfth Night), Michael Buffer (Piper’s Lord of Flies, Lilith, Nocturnes, Corday), and Lucas Syed (New School graduate ’11) will be composing an original soundtrack. Inspired by the work of Nigel Williams (Piper’sNocturnes), Moreau will be an exciting experience in physical storytelling. The Island of Doctor Moreau will be presented July 7, 14, and 21 at 8 p.m.

Piper is proud to announce our first annual Piper Play Series under the direction of John P. McEneny and Philip Suracci (Theatrepeace). 10 plays will be produced at BAX (Brooklyn Arts Exchange) on June 15, 16, 17.

We’re looking for one-act plays that explore the world of children. We’re interested in smart, quirky, tragic, exciting, funny, disturbing, and dynamic short plays that investigate the complicated lives of young people. Ideally, some of your characters should be school aged (aged 11 – 20).

Phase 1: Ten plays will be selected by artistic director, John P. McEneny and Associate Director Phillip Suracci to be presented on June 15, 16, 17 at BAX Brooklyn Arts Exchange 421 5th Avenue, Brooklyn, NY. Piper will recruit directors and actors. Simple settings are preferred.

Phase 2: Three plays will be then be chosen by a panel of artists selected by the Piper Board of Directors and will be presented on Wednesday, July 18th 2012 during the Piper Summer season at the Old Stone House in Washington Park, Brooklyn, NY 11215. All three plays will be published in the inaugural publication Piper Plays: Smart One Acts for Young Actors.

Phase 3: At the performance on July 18th – the audience will vote on their favorite one act and the winner will receive $500.00 prize. Votes will be tallied by Kim Maier, executive director of The Old Stone House.
Please consider both performing spaces when submitting your play. The BAX space is a small intimate black box space that seats 50 and the Old Stone House outdoor space is a 24 foot wide stage the sits on the courtyard of the Old Stone House and seats 350 +. Your play must be able to adapt to both spaces.

Plays may have been produced before but should be unpublished. Running time: 10 – 40 minutes. We are very interested in working with playwrights who want to be involved in the short rehearsal process and who will commit to attending one of the productions. Playwrights must be in attendance on July 18th in order to be eligible for the $500 cash prize. Plays with attached directors or actors will be considered – please make sure you inform Mr. McEneny when you submit your play.

In two-week cycles from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm students in small groups will be given a gentle introduction to theatre. Students will play theatre games and rehearse scenes from Folk Tales or Shakespeare in the mornings in preparation for a staged performance, and in the afternoons create the costumes and the world of the play in the great room of the Old Stone House or in air-conditioned classroom across the street in William Alexander Middle School 51. This education program is, by far, Piper’s most popular. Hurry, it fills up fast!

Folk Tales of West Africa & Russia

Shakespeare for Beginners

Dates: July 2 – 13 and July 16 – 27

A gentle introduction to Shakespeare. Students spend their days on improvisation games, vocabulary building, and character development as they rehearse an abbreviated version of Shakespeare’s greatest comedies. Afternoons are spent painting sets, building props, and pulling costumes from our massive costume collection.

Join us for Piper Theatre Workshop – one of the most exciting drama programs in Brooklyn. Under the care of experienced directors, each child becomes part of a small company of student actors creating a challenging theatrical production. Days are broken up by Specials – classes in fight choreography, improvisation, puppetry, theatre games and vocal technique.

Auditions for specific roles will take place on Monday, July 2, the first day of the program. Preferences will be considered in selection but are NOT guaranteed. Students MUST participate in each of the final performances to be a part of the workshops.

Pinocchio.  Adapted from the Carlo Collodia stories. Directed by Mollie Lief. The dark tale of a wooden puppet who yearns to become a real human boy. His adventures take him to places both grim and exciting – with the help of Geppetto, the blue-haired fairy, and of course, a talking cricket.

James and the Giant Peach.  Directed by Meredith Hackett. The adventures of James Henry Trotter, who escapes his terrible aunts, Spiker and Sponge, and travels the world with giant insects in a flying peach.

The Winter’s Tale.  By William Shakespeare.  Directed by John P. McEneny and Vasile Flutur. One of Shakespeare’s late tragicomedies, The Winter’s Tale turns on jealousy, rage and injustice and ends, after great adventure, in joy and goodwill.
