About the Film
On the heels of the historic repeal of the United States military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, actor Marc Wolf, filmmaker John C. Walsh (Ed’s Next Move, Pipe Dream) and Creative Consultant Mary Harron (American Psycho, I Shot Andy Warhol) bring Wolf’s acclaimed one-man Off-Broadway show to the screen. The text was created verbatim from tape-recorded interviews conducted between 1997-1999 with hundreds of soldiers and veterans, male and female, gay and straight. Marc distills them into compelling portraits that are alternately funny, brutal, poignant, and tragic. These are the true stories of America’s gay soldiers, told in their own words.

THE MISER BY MOLIERE

Adapted and Directed by Welker White
Featuring Damian Young (The Comeback, Californication, All My Sons on B’way) as Harpagon, Jan Leslie Harding (Obie Award winner) as Frosine and Todd C. Bartels as Cleante.

“In one word, he loves money better than reputation, than honor, and than virtue; and the very sight of one who asks for it sends him into fits; it is touching him in his mortal part, it is piercing his heart, it is tearing out his very entrails.”

Welker-Interview

A new adaptation of Moliere’s dark comedy adapted and directed by Welker White. Brother and sister, Cleante and Elise want to marry their chosen lovers but their father, Harpagon, has very different plans. Pushing his children’s interests aside, Harpagon arranges marriages for them with one thing in mind — finding suitable partners without having to part with the one thing he loves the most: his money! Miser

2011 Piper Theatre Productions Equity Showcase: Moliere’s The Miser

This July, Piper Theatre continues its dedication to out-of the-ordinary free community programming for an 11th summer, with noted actor/director/educator Welker White adapting and directing a modern version of Moliere’s classic, “The Miser,” as the centerpiece of Piper’s roster of equity and youth productions focusing on local and emerging talent.

This made-in-Brooklyn original adaptation takes Moliere’s 17th century satire and re-imagines it for a 21st century audience. Besides Moliere’s ahead-of-his-time dark and cynical approach to comedy in “The Miser,” its themes – love vs. money, power struggles between parents and children – translate uncannily well to our place and time.

All performances are free and outdoors on Thursday and Friday evenings, July 7,8, 14, 15, 21 and 22. Bring a blanket or a beach chair, plan a picnic or visit the Old Stone House concession stand with sandwiches and franks from Willie’s Dawgs, and a selection of beer and wine from The Gate.

Join us for our extra festive opening night cast party fundraiser after the show on July 7!

YOUTH PRODUCTIONS 2011

For four hot weeks in July, the campus of the Old Stone House in Washington Park comes alive with youthful creativity and imagination. In the past five years, Piper has grown to include over 150 students (ages 8 to 17) who spend their summer dancing, sword fighting, memorizing text, singing, delving into rich characters, and learning the craft of acting. All youth performances will be held outdoors on the beautifully renovated turf behind the Old Stone House in Washington Park as well as a second performance inside the neighboring historic Lyceum Theatre. All of our productions have professional sound design by Andrew Christian, offer delicious concessions, and are FREE unless otherwise noted. The Living Series 2011: Living on the Edge

“Living at risk is jumping off the cliff and building your wings on the way down.” Ray Bradbury

This year The Living Series explores the theme of risk. Whether we are galvanized to take healthy risks in our relationships and careers to push ourselves to more fulfilling situations, pursue endeavors at which we know there’s a good chance of failing, seize uncertain opportunities because we don’t know how long they will present themselves, or even make foolish or dangerous choices to help us feel more alive, without occasionally venturing out onto the edges of existence, life would become colorless and dry. After all, is anything ever a sure thing? It’s the things we dare to do that define us.

The plays presented in this year’s Living Series all navigate their ways through risky moments. Take a breath. Here we go!

Performance Dates: June 16-18, 2011
Time: 7:00 pm
Location: BAX/Brooklyn Arts Exchange
Original Short Plays under the guidance of Rachel Rear.
