PIPER FALL ’23 & SPRING ’24 AFTERSCHOOL

AFTERSCHOOL AT OLD STONE HOUSE (ages 10 – 12)

FALL SESSION:  

Rumplestilskin (An original adaptation by Patti Veconi. )

Directed by Delia Cunningham (10 Weeks / 10 Sessions; $375)

Tuesdays, Sept 12, 19, 26, October 3, 10, 17, 24, 31, Nov, 14, 21; 3:30pm-5:30pm

A spooky Halloween tale.  A miller has a daughter, of whom he is immensely proud. One day, the miller makes an empty boast to the king of the land that his daughter can spin gold out of straw; the king, taking the miller at his word, has the miller’s daughter taken to a chamber where she is told to turn all of the straw in the room into gold if she values her life.

SPRING SESSION:

Little House on the Prairie (10 Weeks / 10 Sessions; $375) 

Tuesdays, Jan 9, 16, 23, 30, Feb 6, 13, 27, March 5, 12, 19; 3:30pm-5:30pm

A beloved classic tale of frontier life. The story follows the Ingalls family, Pa, Ma, Mary, and Laura, as they travel to Kansas with the hope of building a home there. They struggle to make the journey, and when they get there, Pa works for months to build them a house. Even still, not all is well, and the family deals with threats from nature.

PIPER SUMMER STARLINGS

STARLINGS IMAGINATION STATIONS

 8 students / Ages 7 – 9 / 3 Sessions / $500

Session 1:  July 8, 9, 10, 11, 12; Session 2:  July 15, 16, 17, 18, 19; Session 3:  July 22, 23, 24, 25, 26

Weeklong immersions in creative play, improvisation and physical storytelling where exploration and imagination soars. Small groups will create their very own play, make their costumes and sets, and perform for family and friends—a gentle introduction to the world of theater-making.

The themes will be inspired by this season’s exploration of Alice and Wonderland. The Jaborwocky, Walrus and the Carpenter & The Red Queen.

PIPER STARLINGS SHAKESPEARE

12 students / Ages 10 – 12 / July 1-12 (No Class on July 4th) / $950

An introduction to Shakespeare.  An immersion into verse, swordplay, world building culminating in a 35-minute play.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Deep in the magical forest, a feuding King and Queen cross paths with four runaway lovers and a troupe of actors, resulting in tempestuous love triangles, contagious fogs, and moonlight revels.

PIPER THEATRE WORKSHOPS (PTW)


PIPER THEATRE WORKSHOP

Two four-week workshops where students will create a physical adaptation of a classic work of fiction with an emphasis on physicality, transformative props, and ensemble storytelling.  Both shows will have an original live underscore by Rob Parker.

Ages 12 – 16 / July 1 -27* (No Class July 4th; *Saturday Performance) / $2050

Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll.  Adapted by Madeline Wall.

Alice’s further adventures as she moves through a mirror into another unreal world of illogical behavior, this one dominated by chessboards and chess pieces, Red and White Queens, and a strange white rabbit.

Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury. 

This mysterious tale tells the story of Will Halloway and Jim Nightshade, two small-town boys whose lives are threatened when a mysterious carnival arrives the week before Halloween.

GORBAL WOODS 2023

PIPER MUSICAL WORKSHOP

An introductory exploration of musical theater.  Structured for students with an interest in musical theater and who are ready to learn how to sing and dance.  Musicals are 35 – 45 minutes with at least 6 songs.  

Billy Ragamatag

An original musical by Rob Parker.  Book by John P. McEneny.   

A boy who is different is born into the hard-laboring mining community of Scofield, Utah. Deemed obsolete by his siblings after the tragic death of his father in a mine explosion, he takes a train north and finds employment with the Shadow Circus, a mysterious spectacle full of magic, intrigue, and heart-pounding performances. Can Billy finally find his place in the world of the circus, or will a tragic accident end the Shadow Circus – and Billy’s new, beloved world – forever?

FOUR-WEEK MUSICAL INTENSIVE

MUSICAL INTENSIVES

An intensive musical theater experience where students learn to sing, dance, and act in a full musical.  Students should have at least acted in one musical before and be seeking a rigorous environment. Students will audition for both shows. Preferences will be taken into consideration, but students in the intensives must remain open and may be cast in either production.

Ages 12 – 17/ July 1 -27* (No Class July 4th; *Saturday Performance) / $2250

A Summer Under the Sea

The Little Mermaid Jr.  Book is by Doug Wright, music by Alan Menken, and lyrics by Howard Ashman (written for the film), with additional lyrics by Glenn Slater.  Based on the Hans Christian Andersen story and the Disney film. Music Adapted and Arranged by David Weinstein.

Ariel is a mermaid, ready to give up her voice and join the land of the humans, when she falls in love with a young prince.  Classic songs include If Only, Part of this World, Under the Sea, and Poor Unfortunate Souls.

Disney’s The Little Mermaid JR. Is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.mtishows.com

Spongebob Squarepants Co-conceived by Tina Landau with songs by various artists and a book by Kyle Jarrow.

Plunge into this stunning all-singing, all-dancing, dynamic stage show! When the citizens of Bikini Bottom discover that a volcano will soon erupt and destroy their humble home, SpongeBob and his friends must come together to save the fate of their undersea world. With lives hanging in the balance and all hope lost, a most unexpected hero rises up. The power of optimism really can save the world!

The SpongeBob Musical is based on the beloved animated series created by Stephen Hillenburg. It features a book by Kyle Jarrow, with original songs by Yolanda Adams, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, Jonathan Coulton, Alexander Ebert of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, The Flaming Lips, Lady A, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T’s, They Might Be Giants and T.I., and songs by David Bowie, Tom Kenny, and Andy Paley. Additional Lyrics by Jonathan Coulton / Additional Music by Tom Kitt

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

PLEASE NOTE: Ages are suggested.  There are no cut-offs for age.  Artists are at different development periods.  If a younger child would like to work with older children or a older child is comfortable with younger children, that is fine.  Please contact john@pipertheatre.org for more information to see where your child might find success.

All rehearsals will be held from 9am – 4pm at a Park Slope location to be determined. Due to the performance nature of our program, students are expected to attend EVERY day.

Proof of COVID-19 vaccination will be required for all students and staff. (Students will also need to provide proof of MMR immunizations.)

Financial aid is available upon request. Application Deadline is April 15, 2024 (early submission strongly recommended.)  Apply upon registration.  Deposit waived pending awards announced on May 1, 2024.

Non-refundable deposit is required upon registration:

$250 for one-week programs / $500 for two-week, three-week & four-week programs

Full payment is due by May 15, 2024
